THE EXPANSION PROJECT

Partner with Us to Build Something Remarkable

The expansion of the Avoca Museum envisions the construction of a large, enclosed facility that would significantly enhance the museum’s ability to present local and regional history, engage with the community, and host a variety of events. This project is a significant step toward enhancing Avoca’s capabilities in furthering our mission to collect, preserve, and interpret the region’s cultural and natural history for the benefit of both present and future generations.

This initiative is a strategic investment in the museum's future, enhancing its ability to serve the community, preserve regional history, and sustain its operations through diversified revenue streams. By providing a versatile, enclosed venue, the museum will be well-positioned to expand its offerings, attract more visitors, and strengthen its financial foundation.

KEY ELEMENTS

  • The museum will be better equipped to present comprehensive narratives of the Staunton River Valley's history through six key epochs:

    • Native American History: A dedicated section focusing on the Native American tribes of the Staunton River Valley, particularly the Saponi and Monacan tribes, highlighting their culture, history, and contributions to the region.

    • Colonial and Revolutionary Era: Exhibits detailing life on the edge of the frontier in the 1700s, the influential Ward and Adams families, and the contributions of Charles Lynch during the American Revolution. This would include Lynch's efforts in producing gunpowder and bullets, his actions during the Battle of Guilford Court House, and his role in quelling a Tory uprising. A nuanced presentation of "Lynch Law" and its historical context will also be included, dispelling many myths associated with the term.

    • Black History and Plantation Life: A section dedicated to discussing the history of enslavement at Avoca and the broader region, the manumission movement led by the Lynch family and other influential Quakers, and the complexities of plantation life.

    • Civil War Era: Exhibits focusing on Avoca during the Civil War, including the stories of Charles Henry Lynch and Brigadier General James Dearing, the latter's service for the Confederacy, and his eventual death. This section will provide a comprehensive look at the Civil War's impact on the region and the individuals involved.

    • Gilded and Victorian Eras: This section will cover the Victorian era at Avoca, the influence of the Fauntleroy family, the significance of the railroad industry, and James Dearing's service during the Spanish-American War. It would also feature Juliet Fauntleroy's Native American collection and her efforts in collecting local folk music. Additionally, the architectural history of the current mansion and its predecessors will be explored.

    • Modern History: Focusing on the industrial development of Altavista, particularly the Lane and English companies, the founding of the town, and the museum's rehabilitation by Country Living magazine and the Lane Company. This section will highlight the transition from a rural past to a modern industrial center.

    • Protection from Weather: The new enclosed venue would replace the current reliance on tents, providing a controlled environment that protects exhibits and events from inclement weather. This change would allow the museum to be operational throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions.

    • Increased Private Rental Capacity: By providing a space suitable for private events such as weddings, corporate functions, and community gatherings, the museum can significantly increase its rental income. In FY23-24, private rentals contributed to about 13% of the museum's income. The expansion would enable the museum to boost this revenue stream, providing more funds for general operations.

    • Enhanced Fundraising Capabilities: Currently, fundraising events constitute approximately 12% of the museum's operating budget. With the new venue, the museum could host larger and more frequent fundraising events, potentially increasing this percentage. Given that nearly a quarter of the museum's fundraising capacity is tied to events, expanding this capacity would be a strategic move to ensure financial stability and growth.

    • Concerts and Festivals: The expanded venue will enable the museum to host a variety of cultural events, such as concerts and festivals, enhancing its role as a community hub. These events would attract more visitors to the area, fostering community engagement and supporting local tourism.

    • Educational Programs and Workshops: The museum could offer more educational programs and workshops tailored to different age groups, including school programs, adult education, and special interest workshops, furthering its mission to educate the public about the region's rich history.

    • Economic Impact on Altavista: The expansion will likely have a positive economic impact on the town of Altavista. With increased visitors to the museum for events, exhibits, and workshops, local businesses such as restaurants, shops, and hotels may experience a boost in patronage. The museum's growth could also lead to the creation of new jobs, both directly within the museum and indirectly through the increased demand for services and amenities in the community. This economic activity would contribute to the overall vitality and growth of Altavista.

Thanks to the generous support of our community and partners, over $320,000 in cash contributions and pledged support has been raised since the expansion project was announced in Fall 2024!

As we look ahead, Avoca remains committed to advancing this transformative effort by actively seeking additional private donations and grant funding. One key opportunity we are pursuing is the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission's Southern Virginia Program, which would provide significant support for the next phase of development. Grant awards are expected to be announced in Fall 2025.

We invite you to visit Avoca, explore our historic grounds, and see firsthand the impact of this project in progress. Whether through a financial contribution or by sharing our story, your support helps preserve Avoca’s legacy and ensure its future as a year-round destination for the community.
